HEADCUT MELTERS

The heady splendour of London-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Holly Mullineaux’s debut single is palpable. Released under the moniker Headcut, ‘Melters’ is what 80s-infused post punk dreams are made of, unravelling like an unsettling and inebriated wander through the darkened streets of London’s underbelly. Boasting production and drumming skills from Max Goulding (of fellow noise enthusiasts Bo Gritz), ‘Melters’ opens with a pummeling space age drum beat, before giving way to tightly locked rhythms that bring to mind the effortless forward motion of early 00s disco-punk. What separates this track from that scene however, are the sinister and psychedelic guitar licks that weave in and out of the mix, alongside Mullineaux’s own haunting, Warpaint-esque vocals. There is an anxious quality to ‘Melters’, born as it is “out of frustration from a tiresome living situation”, but its criticisms of self-pity and its encouragement of self-fulfillment imbue the track with a contrasting inspirational appeal. We can’t wait to hear more from Mullineaux in the future. Face-melting work indeed. -KJ
